Shadows Over Lakehead - Black Wyrmling

Day 1 - lunch first day - attacked by 2 owlbears - Sirni did a deathblow on one of them - Rollo - skinned out half an owlbear pelt each, and some owlbear steaks

nothing at dinner - used 1 day rations

evening atacked by 4 ghouls - Sirni hacked one's head off

Day 2

Rollo snapped awake. Away from "civilization" he was a light sleeper, the Green never dormant. About him was commotion. The camp was aroused. Amber was now foot nudging the snoring Grimm, not gently. Some would call it a kick. The parrot squawked, defecated. The odor more awaking the Grimm than Amber's endeavours. Cursing all gods fond of parrots, the rough dwarf wiped the mess from his forehead. "I'm up!", he snarled, showing amber his teeth.

The parrot always bewildered Rollo. It was not trained, not a companion, not a summoned and not a cohort. So what was the Grimm doing with said parrot? As a child of the Green and because it involved an animal, he would investigate, but when there was time.

He joined Weaver at the edge of the encampment, the campfire behind him. It's light bright enough to use his low light vision. He could just make out two large humanoid shapes at the edge of his sight. Hima was already firing arrows at them. Her wood elf vision better in the dark. "What?" he questioned his fellow halfling. Last night it had been two owlbears attacking. Tonight? "Ogres" was the wizard's reply.

Now Rollo had no particular feelings, good or bad, for ogres. They were not undead. They belonged in the 'circle of life'. If they left him alone, he would leave them alone, unless like anything else, they broke the laws of the Green. They were attacking, he would defend. He took in the distance between the ogres and them. "Where do you want their approach" he asked Weaver. The other halfling looked around. "See if you can get them to move over there." He pointed. By now Hima had loosed two more arrows. The others were all up and preparing themselves. "Will do. They will move unless they are truly stupid. In which case nothing else might be needed". Weaver nodded and moved to his indicated spot.

Rollo called upon the Green. The Green obeyed. New spiked growth, full of hardened thorns, pointed needles and prickles sprung from the ground, covering an immense area. So large that the only safe exit was to move to where Weaver wanted them.

One was smart and did so. The other was not and shouted an agony scream as the spike growth punched through into feet. More screams as it moved through the magical area to join its partner. Then it was Weaver's turn. Having them where he wanted, he spun arcane energy and cast a web. Spidery, rope thick sticky, silk-like web treads filled the space where the two ogres stood, wrapping around them as spider food. It would take them time to break free, if ever they did and slow them if they did. He turned to Rollo. "Bought you the time. Make it easy to finish them." The druid nodded and called upon the Green. Again answering, shades of green faerie fire shimmered and flickered, outlying the two humanoids. The light turned them into 'impossible to miss' targets.

By now the whole group was up and ready. Arrow, daggers, balls of flame, eldritch blasts, javelins, all shot at the ogres. It was over quickly. As the others went to examine the charred, blasted bodies, Drakara approached Rollo. "Another night, another encounter. I was hoping to see you wild shape." Rollo looked up at the tattooed half-orc.

"There was no need. Whenever a wizard and a druid synchronize, the battlefield is under their control."

"Still, I would have liked to see it. The reason being that the only times I have seen has been in dreams; dreams that that thing", she indicated Sirni, the sentient red metallic battleaxe now resting on Amber’s back, "forced us into. I wanted to compare the reality to the dream."

Then Rollo remembered. She had not been with the group when they had 'rescued the chicken eggs' and so missed his wild shaping. "As events become more dangerous, I am sure you will get your chance. They're coming back now and by the look on Amber's face, they did not find much (just two ogre pouches with 94 gp and 79 gp - not much). And that parrot just crapped again."

Amber put the ogres' large leather hide armor in her chest, but left the large javalins and large great clubs behind.

Day 3

A pretty boring day - nothing happenned - except a lot of walking and loud singing.

day 4 arrive at noon in Lakehead, all the town fishing boats are docked, few people, somber mood - acid burns on buildings and boats, on the town well - speak to Odelia Lynn, female halfling dock master - dragon been around for a month or so - has been tracked to the ruins of light house south of the lake - had paid Rolinar bounty of 150 gp, find on his corpse, left a week ago, but hasn't been seen - but after Rolinar sent out, dragon attacked village in a rage. - but probably find another 150 gp - and loot his corpse - Rolinar wearing a breastplate, and holding a red metal spear (like Sirni) -

lighthouse - door broken in to let a large creature in. owls scout, second and third floors have mostly rotted away

first floor - hole in ground under the stairs - dragon's prescence has corrupted the ground and the building

- can hear the dragon swearing and saying "die already" - long tunnel, around the corner, is a blue glow - large room, irridescent shallow pool in the center, dragon on far side attacking something in a crevasse. - cavern is 20-30 ft above level of lake

- 11 magic missile, 4 bolt, 3 fire = 18 - arrow 25 = 43 damage - psychic 18 = 61 damage - dragon drops

- red dragon born in crevasse - armor is acid damaged, clutching a red metal spear. - Rolinar drinking a potion

Gimble opens with a salvo of three magic missiles at the black dragon across the cave, then with a surge of adrenalin, launches a flaming bolt from his crossbow at the beast, injuring it further. Hima then scored a critical hit against the wyrmling, piercing its throat with an arrow.

The creature screeched in pain, as Yotte sang a melody of dissonant whispers into its psyche, shattering its soul and dropping the black dragon wyrmling dead.

"Was that a killer performance or what?" asked Yotte.

- to Sirni - are you the abandoned, did you come to save me? - Sirni - tell the truth, why did you abandon me! - Rolinar - anger at stopping the game - forced to go to his room - - i don't need a sentient weapon Sirni - I have done well without you, who is this, - rOLINar -Atreya - the silent point - did not make this mistake forging this spear (sirni made by Roinar) +2 to hit, +2 damage, +1 aC needs

  • ring of acid resistance
  • periapt of wound closure
  • 150 gp from Rolinar
  • 150 gp final reward

Sirni - you did not deserve me - - strip him of all his possessions

Rolinar attacks Amber, rolls a 1, fumbles, Gimble magic missile (12 hp), Hima crits (31 hp)

Rolinar swung feebly at Amber and Sirni, missing completely. Automatically reacting, Gimble hurled three magic missiles at Rolinar, agravating his wounds. Her arrow ready, and acting on instinct, Hima critically hit the red dragonborn through the skull, killing him instantly.

As Amber is skinning the black dragon wyrmling with Rollo's help, Drakara asks if she could have the teeth. She wants to make a necklace from them. Amber pulls out each one and gives them to her. Amber then resumes skinning the dragon hide and wings and puts the whole 40 lbs in her chest.

    - Drakara sees

  • coins 101 pp, 191 cp, 331 sp 251 gp
  • 11 gems (15 gp each)
  • tarnished silver ware - goblets/chalice 25 gp x2
  • tarnished face mirror (25 gp)
  • dull leather boots - do not move (magic) Boots of springing and jumping
  • dagger +1 - do not move (magic)

Sirni - wants to go back to the tavern -

The fight was over. First the young black dragon, the terror of Lakehead, was slain and then the red dragonborn Rolinar the Sanquin had been dealt with. There had been some arguments between him and the intelligent battleaxe Sirni that led to the dragonborn's final confrontation with the Random Dudes, but Rollo was not certain what it was all about but now it really was a moot point. Death was final, as it should be.

Realizing the value of dragon pelts, he was busying himself with skinning the black. He had learned the art of skinning while under Nera Aquilae's tutorship, becoming adept at it. The others were discussing and arguing over Rolinar's corpse about magic spears, boots, tattoos, bracelets, whatever, things that did not concern the halfling. He was just thinking about how Hassa Issi could craft excellent scale mail armor and shield from the dragon hide. It would enhance his druidic hard-core look once he persuaded Ma Motwicke to use his owlbear hides to make owlbear boots and a mantle-cloak. There were certain types of females that were very susceptible to such appearances of power. And as Raven Battlestar's only male acolyte during his teenage years he had learned how to satisfy many female fellow teenage acolytes of various humanoid races - well, he had been highly taught by some of the older ones.

He was almost done when a shadow fell across him. Looking up, the Grimm's deep black void-eyes stared back down. In one hand the greenish-hued dwarf held the red metal spear last wielded by Rolinar. In his other hand was a fancy dagger. "Magic" he gruffed, handing the dagger towards Rollo. "I claim for you." If the Grimm had a buddy amongst the Random Dudes, it would have been Rollo. Why? Most likely because the Green halfling fully accepted the Grimm for what he was. The others were a bit hesitant to get close to the aloof, snarly warlock. His appearance unsettled them. But not Rollo. He realized the Grimm was a predator and accepted his nature as he would of any predator in the wild. It was natural. Hence Rollo never showed any disdain or discomfort. He offered to pair with Grimm whenever, even partnering with him on the night watches. In return, the tendrilled-swaying bearded dwarf, untrusting of the others tended to look after Rollo. And so, the gift of the dagger.

"Most welcome thanks" Rollo replied accepting the dagger. As he did so, Page the Parrot, who always sat on the Grimm's shoulder winked and ran a stream of white, wet bird waste down the dwarf's back. The parrot familiar's actions still puzzled Rollo. Perhaps it had something to do with the Grimm's patron. Regardless, he did not say anything. He would let someone else mention it to the Grimm and endure whatever consequences.

    - black dragon hide scalemail (no disadvantage to stealth) - cost 100 gp Rollo - black dragon hide shield - cost 20 gp Rollo

Amber, Sirni and Yotte sing at the front of their march back to the village of Lakehead. Along the way, they are ambushed by 7 hobgoblins. During the battle, Rollo summons a giant boar from his bag of tricks. After the battle, Drakara makes herself a necklace of hobgoblin ears.

collected reward of 150 gp for killing dragon and had huge lunch time celebration. The Grimm is gifted with a small cask (2 lbs) of the lakehead ale.

Amber, Sirni and Yotte sing at the front of their march back to the Trip Away Inn. The Grimm grumbles about the noise.
Something about how every hungry monster within a mile can hear the dinner bell ringing to come and get it.

The first day of their journey back was uneventul. As was the night.

On the morning of the second day, they were ambushed by 6 goblin snipers, a goblin shaman, and a goblin boss riding a large red-furred worg. A riderless silver-furred worg also attacked. The snipers would quickly shoot a volley of arrows, then quickly hide and move to a new postion, only to snipe again and again.

During the goblin ambush, several arrows from their sneaky snipers would have hit Amber if not for Sirni, as the arrows glanced off her red metal axe blade instead of finding their target.

Rollo regained conscious. On his back, he could only see the faces of the Grimm and Yotte peering down. His head hurt. Memories returned. A goblin ambush. Worgs! Combat. The casting of spells, wild shaping. Goblin shaman. Fire burning him. Darkness descending. Fading out.

"How are you feeling" That was Yotte asking. "Better. I still live?" was his mumbled response.

"Well obviously, since you are asking dumb questions. I did some healing on you. You can finish up later. Just rest a bit longer." Yotte then left. The Grimm just grunted and did the same. Rollo could now hear Amber ordering Weaver and Drak to find any magical items on the dead goblins. He realized now what he had done wrong. What led to his demise. He depended too much on the Green. He had forgotten that he was a forest halfling and that such halflings had their own survival traits. He would not make that mistake again.

Drakara added some goblin ears to her necklace of hobgoblin ears.

After the battle, to have his critters at the ready for the next encounter, Rollo summons a rat and a mastiff doggy from his bag of tricks.

The rest of the day was boring, as was the night.

To have his critters at the ready, Rollo summons a goat from his bag of tricks.

The rest of the third day was boring, as was the night.

To have his critters at the ready, Rollo summons a lion from his bag of tricks.

The rest of the fourth day was uneventful as they arrived back in town. After selling the gear from the hobgoblins and goblins, they divided their loot, and went on a shopping spree, much to the delight of the merchants in the market around the Trip Away Inn.

Back at the Trip Away Inn, Amber returns Sirni to her place above the hearth, so Sirni can tell the patrons all about their most recent adventure.
